LCS Choir at Purdue

Music Program Overview

Lafayette Christian School provides its students with a comprehensive music program from Kindergarten through 8th grade. Kindergarten through 5th grade focus on general music concepts two periods per week with performance opportunities at the annual Christmas and Grandparents' Day programs.

5th grade students can elect to participate in beginning band class as a prerequisite to the Junior High Concert Band. Students new to Lafayette Christian School are accepted into the Junior High Concert Band based on their prior ability and/or willingness to develop an acceptable proficiency on an instrument through private lessons. Students have opportunity to audition for Junior High Choir each year. These groups hold several concerts during the year and perform in the immediate Lafayette area several times during the year (e.g. Purdue Memorial Union, National Day of Prayer, Ivy Tech Community College, various churches). Students who are not Choir members take Music Appreciation, a study of the various aspects of music history, musical styles, and music theory.

Reflecting the Maker of Music

by Mr. Ken Goff, former music director and current principal
Music is an integral part of the school community and curriculum at LCS. This is reflected in our chapels, school programs, concerts, contest performances, and in the classroom. Students develop as singers, instrumentalists, and listeners of the various forms and styles of music during their school years, and continue throughout their adult life.

God is the ultimate artist in His design and beauty of creation. Being created in God’s image, we are given the capability to express, recreate, and experience beauty. LCS students learn to use music as a tool for worship and to glorify God.

During a lesson on the fugues of J.S. Bach, a fourth grade student described music as an expression of God’s design of the physical world:
“Bach’s music reflects God’s creation because it is so complex and exquisite. It is like looking at a blade of grass. When you look at it from far away, you see that it is just a blade of grass. But when you look at it closely, you see the intricate parts of the blade of grass as God has created it.”

Music reflects the wonder and beauty of God’s creation, and mirrors the story of God’s redemption—God’s good over evil.

Students develop an understanding of this through the study of music and through performance. As Christians and believers, we can fully sense the aesthetic qualities of music and of God’s creation. Looking at a sunset and experiencing its beauty can only be fully appreciated and enjoyed when we see it as God’s artistry and His created beauty. This is true when we express ourselves artistically as image bearers of God–capable of creating and sensing beauty.

The level of skill that we see in our performing groups is evidence of this focus on seeking excellence in Christ’s name and the understanding of music as reflective of God’s creation and His nature.

Current LCS students and alumni reach high levels of musicianship as evidenced in participation in state music festivals–individual and group performances. Examples of this high level can be seen in current students qualifying for state solo and ensemble contest and in consistently receiving high ratings at band and choir contest.

Lafayette Christian School students not only excel musically while here, but they continue musical pursuits throughout their education and their lives. Our alumni are involved in musical performing groups in our area high schools, Purdue University, as well as other colleges, and churches.
