Chapter 3: Equations (test on November 8)

Lesson Presentations

This is a chapter where the 7th grade will be showing a lot of step-by-step processes as they find solutions to mathematical equations. We will start with learning about the distributive property in a visual way using computer software called Geometer's Sketchpad. We will also be learning about combining "like terms" using this program. From there we will move on to solving various equations by multiplying, dividing, adding, or subtracting the same value on both sides of the equals sign. This is very much like the pan-balance problems they have worked on the last few years.

Historic Hotels Project (began October 5)

The 7th grade has been working in groups of three on an economics problem. They have been commissioned by Mr. Graham to determine what price he should charge for a room at a historic hotel he owns. The students have been given the condition that if he charges $60, all 80 rooms will be filled. For every dollar he increases the price, one less room will be filled. It is a great mathematical problem with a variety of possible routes to an answer!

Chapter 2: Integers

The 7th grade has been reviewing operations associated with integers, whole numbers (0,1,2,3,...) and their opposites (-1, -2, -3,...). These were taught last year and are being reviewed in this chapter. They are also learning about absolute values and simplifying algebraic expressions.

Chapter 1: Tools of Algebra (began August 15)

The 7th grade has been working on learning some of the basic tools of algebra--order of operations, solutions, graphing, and patterns
